Being part of a publishing team committed to making an experiment and collaborative works rather than focusing on gaining profit is such a dream for me. There are many things I supposed can’t happen are underway with Pustaka Pias. I love to engage in the book communities since I initiated the literacy movement with my friends named Pijar, Alit, and Sulur.

If I could only choose one of my favorite books, I would recommend Konferensi Asia—Afrika 1955: asal-usul intelektual dan warisannya bagi gerakan global antiimperialisme by Wildan Sena Utama. It is a history book that depicting an event using a global perspective with a good narrative strategy. This book has left an impression on me, just like reading a novel. As an editor, this non-fiction book gives me such an image for a manuscript I dreamed of.

I’m enthusiastic to support writers worldwide to make Indonesian speaking readers recognize them, and I want to show the world many good books from Indonesian writers.

Working in a publishing house is something that never crossed my mind earlier. Even though I spend most of my time with books—writing, reading, working in the library—but for me, publishing work is closely related to business, something I avoid because I’m bad at math.

The offer from Pustaka Pias came randomly. Starting from Twitter, I discussed the possibility of translating a book with Kelana and continued to chat about Pustaka Pias’ cultural views and business concepts. In the end, I decide to join because I want to participate in learning to bridge the development process of cultural discourse in Indonesia, starting from curating the book, overseeing the production process, and packaging it attractively for readers.

As someone who watches the hubbub of literature in Indonesia closely, I think Budi Darma’s Rafilus is underrated within the list of interesting books’ conversation. I like how he experiments with writing technics, interwove texts from the Koran and tales of wayang, combining it with Surabaya’s urban life and the remnants of colonialism that overshadow Rafilus’ character background. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to enrich their reading of Indonesian literature. Together with Pustaka Pias, I hope to invite more people to explore various stories and cultural discourses, both through writing and reading.

I grew up surrounded by books then fell in love with them and now living with and for them. Until now I still enjoy working anything that is related with books. Being involved in publishing is an opportunity for me to select and provide good reading materials.

It is almost impossible for me to pick one specific title, because as I read more I also develop new perspective on the materials that I have read. But I always return to Clues, Myths, and the Historical Method by Carlo Ginzburg whenever I have a writer’s block. It’s a history book that not only provides good narrative, but also elaborated analysis.

I am excited to join the editing team to create an inclusive space for Indonesian writers, especially for aspiring young authors.

As a newcomer in the publishing world, having a team that provides a humanist spirit and a tremendous professional ethic is such a humbling moment for me. I get to work with people I consider as the “giants” in their fields and get the opportunity to learn from them without being pressured to feel small; instead, I get this sense of community, which helps me overcome my internal obstacles.

I have been growing up with books, and many books have helped me realize my concerns, one of them is Weeping Under This Same Moon by Jana Laiz. Set amidst the Vietnam War’s disruption, a young “boat people” girl seeks refuge in the US and crosses path with an angry American teenage girl whose concern about the environment only makes her be outcasted. I get teary just by recalling the story.

I am very honored that now I have the place working in Pustaka Pias, I can help writers find their readers abroad just like what the translator and editor of Weeping Under This Same Moon have done introducing Laiz’s work to me.

I am happy to join the Pustaka Pias team. From the small contribution I made as sales and marketing, it was a great relief when I got word from the customer, “Sis, the book has arrived.” I slowly understood that communicating with many people is quite fun, and I can feel happy because the book they wanted having arrived on their laps.

My interest in History and literature led me to study History. When I started college, I realized that I had read very few books. Since then, I have wanted to get closer to books; and it turned out to be fun! Writing poetry and short stories is one of my ways to channel my hobbies and expressions. In Pustaka Pias, I found a new space for discussion and opportunities to continue learning.

Becoming an illustrator is a new thing for me, especially to join a publishing world with people who inspire me personally. My presence in this team is an opportunity for me to learn new work that I have never thought of before, especially in processing an illustration for the public to enjoy.

Growing up in a fairly unfamiliar family with art and design and literature made me seek various experiences outside the home regarding the art of design and literature itself, from trying multiple media to learning from people who amazed me for their thoughts and works.

In carrying out my daily life, I am studying in Textile Crafts, so joining Pustaka Pias as an illustrator is a new challenge for me.
